Sana’a (GPA) – After kicking the week off with stunning military parades, Yemen’s resistance filled the streets of Sana’a today in solidarity with Palestine against Israel’s brutal occupation.
Millions of Yemenis marched through Sana’a today to protest Israel’s ongoing occupation of Palestine and the recent closure of al-Aqsa Mosque. Israeli authorities closed the compound which reopened two days later after installing metal detectors. The Fatah Movement called for a Day of Rage on Wednesday. Today Israeli security forces attacked Palestinian protesters with rubber bullets and tear gas.
Yemen’s Ansarullah movement had originally called the march to celebrate the anniversary of their slogan established in 2002 by Sayyed Hussein Al-Houthi. Which reads: “God is Great. Death to America. Death to Israel. Curse on the Jews. Victory to Islam.” “Death to America” may seem off-putting to western readers. It does not mean “death to the American people” but rather death to American imperialism. Which causes ongoing chaos and oppression throughout the world. Especially through US support for Saudi Arabia, which has oppressed the Yemeni people for nearly a century.
“Death to Israel” of course refers to Zionism, which works hand-in-hand with United States’ imperialism. Especially considering Israel’s occupation of Palestine was established with the help of western imperialism post-WWII. “Curse on the Jews” refers to those who support the Zionist state and contribute to anti-Palestinian propaganda. Especially western Jewish settlers who have flocked to Israel’s illegal settlements over the past few decades.
“Victory to Islam” was inspired by Iran’s 1979 Islamic Revolution when Iranians overthrew the Shah– who was put into power by the United States in 1953 via a coup. So “victory to Islam” is not meant to promote violent extremist Islamic laws like we see in Saudi Arabia. But rather victory for indigenous people against western powers who seek to destroy movements that focus on self-determination and reject western exploitation.
With such a strong message of resistance in their slogan, Ansarullah and the rest of Yemen’s resistance decided their anniversary parade would also make a perfect Palestinian solidarity march.
Sayyed Abdul-Malik al-Houthi spoke on Thursday about the destructive and exploitative US foreign policy which seeks to establish economic, financial, and military control over sovereign countries.
