Beijing (GPA) – The recent trade war ‘truce’ between Xi and Trump is at risk from an attack by the anti-China swamp dwellers.
Last weekend, the global markets saw a ray of sunshine as Chinese President Xi Jinping and his counterpart Donald Trump agreed at the G20 meeting in Argentina to what the US president described as a “truce” in the trade war. Although Despite Trump starting this trade war, this was mostly seen as a positive sign that perhaps both leaders were ready to work towards a negotiated end of the tariffs leveled by both countries in the past year.
Now, however, it seems any type of forward progress will need to move through a series of deep state actors who, beyond anything else, oppose peace between Beijing and Washington.
This fact revealed itself earlier this week when Meng Wanzhou, the Chief Financial Officer (CFO) of Chinese telecom giant Huawei, was arrested in Canada.
According to Canadian authorities, Meng was arrested for violating US sanctions on Iran. While Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau says he had a “few days notice” before the arrest happened he did not make President Trump aware beforehand out of “respect for an independent judiciary.”
Bolton knew of attack on China
Trump may not have known about the arrest but there are apparently some Americans who did, most notably US National Security Adviser John Bolton. Although Bolton had advance notice, he also claims he did not know about the arrest during the meeting between Xi and Trump, this seems unlikely since they happened on the same day.
What seems most likely is that, despite Trump’s best efforts to enact whatever his policy is, there seems to be an effort underway to subvert his agenda by those with much more apocalyptic thoughts. Currently, the only member in Trump’s cabinet who opposes the trade war is Steve Mnuchin, who has much less sway than a Bolton or General Kelly.
If you are a Trump supporter this should disturb you. Although we at Geopolitics Alert obviously don’t endorse the man, it is self-evident that the neoconservative slugs he has brought back to life are looking to sabotage his leadership.
As for Meng, she has a bail hearing today in Canada where it is likely she’ll be placed on at least a million dollar surety bond. It is unclear as of now whether she will fight extradition to the US or not. If she does, it is likely to take at least a year.
This all sets a disturbing trend for the US on the global stage. This is yet another warning that, even if Trump breaks an old international agreement, you can’t even trust the new one he negotiates with you directly. People like Bolton don’t just wish for a confrontation with China but also Iran and Russia. If this behavior under Trump is allowed to continue we could face even more serious consequences in the future.
